Sadako

REAL NAME:
Sadako Yamamura. Her name means "chaste" (sada) and "child" (ko).

ORIGINS/RESIDES IN:

She is possibly from Oshima, a town located in the Imizu District in Toyama, Japan.

BACK STORY:

Her mother was called Shizuko Yamamura, a renowned psychic, and her father was called Dr Heihachiro Ikuma. Her mother was persuaded by her father to do a public demonstartion, but due to a migrane brought on by her powers, the show was cancelled. This led to her being labelled a fraud by the press. She fell into a deep depression and commited suicide by jumping into Oshima Islands volcano. Sadako remained on the island with her family. Her father tried to awaken potential psychic powers within himself but gained an illness and was hospitalised for many years. When she was 19, she joined an acting troupe and fell in love with a sound operator named Hiroshi Toyama. He knew of her powers and accepted them. Unfortunately, an early form of the curse found its way into a recording studio and killed 4 people. She fled and went to visit her father in hospital. When she got there she was raped by a doctor called Nagao Jotaro. By doing this, he discovered her darkest secret, she was a hermaphrodite. She then attacked him with her powers but her threw her down a nearby well and sealed her inside. She could see herself reborn years later and vowed revenge on the world. It is believed that she survived for 30 years. She projected a series of images onto a videotape which, when people watch it, killes them after 7 days. She died after creating the tape.

ENEMY(S):

All of humanity.

CREATED BY:

Koji Suzuki.

APPEARS IN:

She started off in a series of novels, Ring, Spiral, Loop and Birthday. She then appeared in the films; Ring, Rasen, Ring 2, The Ring Virus, Ring 0, The Ring, The Ring 2, Rings, Sadako 3D.

PORTRAYED BY:

Rie Ino (Ring, Ring 2), Hinako Saeki (Rasen), Ayane Miura (Ring: Kanzenban), Tae Kimura (Ring: The Final Chapter, Rasen), Yukie Nakama (Ring 0: Birthday), Ai Hashimoto (Sadako 3D), Bae Doona (The Ring Virus), Daveigh Chase (The Ring, The Ring 2) and Kelly Stables (The Ring 2).

APPEARANCE:

She is well known for her long black hair covering her face. She almost appears as that of a shadow. In modern times, she is often seen crawling out of tv screens after she has crawled out of the well. She has pale skin and wears a long white dress. If you look closely you can also see that she has a single, misshapen eye.

HEIGHT:

N/A

PERSONALITY:

She comes across as a shy, inward, possibly scared little girl. After going through all that she did it is no wonder as to why she has such a hatred for human kind. In all of her vengeance, she still manages to keep an almost cool exterior.

FAVOURITE WEAPON:

Her weapon would be her psychic powers, especially telekinesis. It is also thought that she could resurrect people. Her victims die with a look of unearthly anguish on their face so it is assumed that she makes them die of fright, possibly through inducing a heart attack. She placed some of her DNA into the cursed video which becomes a virus (a smallpox one to be precise), infecting those who watch it.

FAMOUS LINE/QUOTE:

N/A

ANY OTHER MEDIA:

A parody of her was made in Scary Movie 3. She was also spoofed in Robot Chicken. There was a film called The Ring: Terrors Realm in which a cure to her virus resides in virtual reality. The metal band Thanatos had a song called "The Sign Of Sadako". She is also popular in Japanese pop culture and Memetic fanart.

POPULARITY:

Her character specifically, brought the popular image of the Japanese ghost (yurei) into western culture. Although it has been in Japan for hundreds if not thousands of years, it was unexplored territory here. Her image, a typical representation of a Japanese ghost, was not seen here before so had the power to chill its viewers to the bone. Although most people these ays say that the whole creepy little girl act is done to death, or the American version is at least, the Japanese version still holds strong. Nothing beats the original as they say.

Regan

REAL NAME:

Regan Teresa MacNeil.

ORIGINS/RESIDES IN:

Originally from Los Angeles but her location at the time of her possession was Georgetown, Washington D.C.

BACK STORY:

She was born in 1961 to Chris MacNeil, who was an actress. She was very much devoted to her mother, even doing little gestures such as leaving a rose on the kitchen table every morning and making her little animals made out of clay. Her Father is in Europe, as her parents were currently going through a divorce. She is brought up as an atheist, not being taught about religion, however, if she ever had a question, her mother would try and answer as best as she could. When she was 12/13, she decided to experiment with an Ouija board. Soon after that, she became possessed by a demon called Pazuzu, who is one of the most powerful demons there is. Whilst playing the Ouija board, she makes contact with a spirit named Captain Howdy. Unbeknownst to her, it is the demon in disguise. She started to portray unusual behaviour for her character such as bad language and strength that was beyond her abilities. At one point she even manages to make her bed shake. Her mother takes her to Dr Klein who provides her with medication and makes her undergo unpleasant tests, both to no avail. One night, when her mother went out with her assistant Sharon, she killed her mothers boyfriend, Burke, by throwing him out of her window. After this, her mother enlists the help of Father Damien Karras. He and Father Lankester Merrin try to release the demon from her, with her killing Merrin in the process. She is wrestled by Karras, with him taunting the demon to go in him. When he does, he commits suicide to help her. When she is 16, she is enlisted to help solve the murders. She has a psychic ability that attracts the demon who she eventually helps defeat.

ENEMY(S):

The child herself has no enemies but the demon within her is the arch enemy of Lankester Merrin. You could also say that the Church is her enemy.

CREATED BY:

William Peter Blatty.

APPEARS IN:

The Exorcist, The Exorcist 2: The Heretic.

PORTRAYED BY:

Linda Blair.

APPEARANCE:

She has long, wavy, mousy hair. Her face is pale and heavily scarred. Her eyes are that of a deep yellow. She is seen to be wearing a long white nightgown.

HEIGHT:

Between 4-5".

PERSONALITY:

Before she becomes possessed, she is usually described as being quite shy and fun loving. When the demon takes over however, she becomes malicious and dangerous. The demon also has a slight sarcasm to him which almost gives him a slight charm.

FAVOURITE WEAPON:

N/A

FAMOUS LINE/QUOTE:

"Your Mother sucks cocks in hell Karras, you faithless slime."

"The power of Christ compels you!"

ANY OTHER MEDIA:

Her picture was used for the popular online game "The Scary Maze Game".

POPULARITY:

I think it goes without saying that she is one of the most popular, if not the scariest characters in movie history. It is also very possible that she was the start of the trend in which an innocent looking child can become the stuff of nightmares. What people possibly fear more about the character is how real she comes across. Exorcism has been around for hundreds of years. The mere possibility that this could happen to anyone is what really stuck with people. It is safe to say that she is a cult icon and she will remain that way for many years to come,

Pamela Voorhees

REAL NAME:

Pamela Sue Voorhees (her maiden name is never revealed).

ORIGINS/RESIDES IN:

Crystal Lake.

BACK STORY:

Pamela was born on January 1st 1930. When she was 15 years old, she became pregnant by Elias Voorhees. At 16 she gave birth to a baby boy called Jason who was diagnosed as hydro cephalic. Elias was said to have been very abusive. She apparently killed him with an axe and left him behind in the trailer she set fire too. She was extremely overprotective of her Son, even going as far as never sending him to school because of his deformity. She manages to get a job as a cook at Camp Crystal Lake, where unfortunately in 1957, her son drowned due to the neglect of the camp counsellors. After her son had died, she had began hearing voices. They were telling her to kill those that were responsible for her sons death. A year after his death, she returned and killed the 2 counsellors who she felt were responsible for her sons death. The camp was then closed and local residents nicknamed it "Camp Blood". When someone tried to re-open the site in 1962, she set fires and poisoned the water, causing it to be closed again. She kept watch of the site from her house which bordered the property. It was prepared to re-open again in 1980. Pamela went on to kill the camp leader and 6 of the camp counsellor's before the surviving counsellor decapitates her with a machete. She is said to have been buried in a run down cemetery, but after Jason was killed by Tommy Jarvis, she was supposedly relocated to Eternal Peace cemetery with him.

ENEMY(S):

The camp counsellors who let her boy drown.

CREATED BY:

Sean S Cunningham.

APPEARS IN:

Friday the 13th, Friday the 13: Part 2 (as a hallucination), Friday the 13th: Part 3 (as a nightmare) and Freddy VS Jason (as a guise of Freddy).

PORTRAYED BY:

Betsy Palmer (Friday 13th & Friday 13 Part 2), Connie Hogan, Marilyn Poucher (Friday 13th Part 3), Paula Shaw (Freddy VS Jason) and Nana Visitor (Friday 13 2009).

APPEARANCE:

A woman in her 50s with short, permed dark blonde hair, brown eyes and slightly tanned skin. She is seen wearing black trousers with an old light blue knitted jumper.

HEIGHT:

N/A

PERSONALITY:

On one hand you could say she was an average, if not over protective mother. On the other hand she was a borderline psychopath. In all fairness, she probably reacted in a way in which many mothers would do if someone harmed their child. The voices in her head cause her to lose all reason and she goes from grieving mother to a one track minded killer.

FAVOURITE WEAPON:

She was generally seen brandishing a bowie knife.

FAMOUS LINE/QUOTE:

"Kill her Mommy!" (mimicking Jason).

ANY OTHER MEDIA:

She appears in Eric Morse's Camp Crystal Lake series, the Jason VS Leatherface series (in which she is renamed Doris), a Jason X mini-series, Friday the 13th: Jason VS Jason X, the novels; Jason X: Death Moon, Friday the 13th: Hell Lake and Friday the 13th: Carnival of Maniacs. There has also been 2 miniseries dedicated to her called Friday the 13th: Pamela's Tale and Friday the 13th: How I Spent My Summer Vacation. She also made an appearance in the first issue of the Freddy VS Jason VS Ash miniseries. She makes an appearance in the Friday the 13th video game and has her own action figure. Apparently, there is an insane character in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, that keeps the severed head of his mother in his living quarters. This is seen as a homage to the movie.

POPULARITY:

One thing she certainly did do was boost up the femininity in serial killers! She also became every married mans worst nightmare. Imagine finding out that you have a mother in law like this?? The character also showed that you didn't have to look a certain way to be a serial killer. As popular as the character is, it is amazing how many people get the killer from the first film wrong (everyone usually says Jason). It is safe to say that the character is more popular now than she was when the film first came out, most people didn't think that it was very "becoming" for a mother figure to go to such lengths to avenge her child.....but then, who wouldn't?

Kayako Saeki

REAL NAME:

Kayako Saeki (formally Kawamata).

ORIGINS/RESIDES IN:

Nerima in Tokyo, Japan.

BACK STORY:

She was born in 1963. Her mother was called Nakagawa Kawamata and she had a sister called Naoko. Even though her father is never seen or mentioned, she appears to have a father figure. Her mother was an Itako (a Japanese exorcist). Her mother made her "eat" the evil spirits that she used to drive from her patients, thus marking her for the rest of her life, making her a target for gossip and cruelty from others. It is said that she was neglected by both of her parents, causing her to feel lonely and depressed (In the original however, it is said that she led a fairly normal life). When she attends university, she falls deeply in love with Shunsuke Kobayashi. After the accidental deaths of her parents, she marries Takeo Saeki, the only person who loved her for who she was, and they have a son called Toshio. Kobayashi is now Toshios teacher and she falls in love with him again, writing down her feelings for him in a diary. Her husband finds her diary and becomes obsessed with the idea that she is having an affair and that his son may not be his. When she gets home, he attacks her, breaking her neck then stabbing her and hiding her in the attic, then drowns their son and cat. He then kills Kobayashis pregnant wife. He flies in a rage down the street before Kayako, now an onryo, comes out of the garbage nearby and kills him.

ENEMY(S):

Humanity in general (anyone who steps foot into the house she haunts).

CREATED BY:

Takashi Shimizu.

APPEARS IN:

Katasumi, Ju-On: The Grudge, Ju-On: The Grudge 2, The Grudge, The Grudge 2, The Grudge 3

PORTRAYED BY:

Takako Fuji, Aiko Horiuchi (The Grudge 3) and Anna Moon (Tales From The Grudge).

APPEARANCE:

She has very long, dark hair that covers her pale face and wild eyes. She is seen to be wearing a white nightgown/dress that is, in the original, covered in blood. She cannot walk, so she is seen to be crawling.

HEIGHT:

Between 5" and 5"4.

PERSONALITY:

She isn't known for her personality as such, more her drive to exact revenge on anyone that she comes into contact with. She is relentless in the way that she hunts and kills and she will not give up until she has you. Although she is an evil spirit, you can't help but feel sorry for her as it was not her fault how she ended up.

FAVOURITE WEAPON:

She doesn't have a physical weapon as such. She has the ability to curse, haunt and use spiritual possession. At times, she is even capable of hair/demonic possession.

FAMOUS LINE/QUOTE:

She cannot speak, due to her throat being crushed and her neck snapped, but she is famous for her death rattle.

ANY OTHER MEDIA:

A web series called "Tales From The Grudge"

POPULARITY:

The Ju-On series was the first in a long line of new wave Asian horror to become popular again. That iconic image of this creepy looking Japanese woman with her hair in her face and that voice that would run shivers through you, is popular even in today's society. The Asian market seriously know their horror hence why this was such a hit when it came out. Her legacy will be a strong one in years to come.

Pinhead

REAL NAME:
His real name is Elliot Spencer. Once he has changed he is also known as Priest, Lead Cenobite, The Pope of Hell, Dr. Paul Gregory and The Engineer. He is only ever referred to as Pinhead in the 3rd movie and Hellworld. It was more of a make up department nickname rather than something Clive had come up with.

ORIGINS/RESIDES IN:
He is located in "The Labyrinth" (Hell).

BACK STORY:
He was born in 1888. He was an English captain in the British Expeditionary Force. It was during this time that he began to suffer with survivor guilt and post traumatic stress disorder. After serving in world war 1, he became so disillusioned with human life that he began seeking out hedonistic methods until he one day opened the Lament Configuration (a puzzle box) in British India in 1921.He is the leader of the Cenobites (they are former human creatures from an extra dimensional realm, who travel to earth through the Lament Configuration to harvest human souls. They are seen to be highly intelligent and articulate. In their transformation however, they lose all memory of their humanity. In his realm, The Labyrinth, he is a follower of the God Leviathan, who is ruler of the realm. It is here that he tortures his souls through both acts of pleasure and pain.

ENEMY(S):
You could technically say Kirsty Cotton as she is the main protagonist in the first film but he will go after whoever opens the box.

CREATED BY:
Clive Barker

APPEARS IN:
Hellraiser, Hellraiser II: Hellbound, Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth, Hellraiser: Bloodline, Hellraiser: Inferno, Hellraiser: Hellseeker, Hellraiser: Deader, Hellraiser: Hellworld, Hellraiser: Revelations.

PORTRAYED BY:
Doug Bradley played him in all of the movies apart from the last one in which he was portrayed by Stephen Smith Collins (Fred Tatasciore done the voice over in the last movie).

APPEARANCE:
He has a grid like pattern carved into his head with nails driven into the intersections. Clive Barker is said to have taken inspiration from punk fashion, Catholicism and S&M clubs. He also drew inspiration from African fetish sculptures.

HEIGHT:
The actor is 5"10, but he appears taller in the film (this is to make him more intimidating).

PERSONALITY:
He is very intelligent and extremely articulate. H e also comes across as quite evocative, almost like Count Dracula. Although he is incoherently evil, he can also be reasoned with and will even bargain with someone if it is to his benefit. He also sees fit to mock Christianity.

FAVOURITE WEAPON:
He does not have a weapon of choice, however, he is an extremely powerful being with equally powerful supernatural abilities. His favourite method of attack is to summon hook and chains that mutilate his victims and literally, tear them apart. He can also teleport, create objects out of thin air, causing explosions and illusions and even creating other Cenobites.

FAMOUS LINE/QUOTE:
"We'll tear your soul apart!!"
"No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering."
"We have such sights to show you!"

ANY OTHER MEDIA:
He appears in Clive Barkers Novella, The Hellbound Heart. He has also appeared in many Hellraiser comics and even his own mini-series, Pinhead. His human incarnation, Captain Spencer, also appeared in The Bloody Red Baron by Kim Newman. Clive Barker also wrote another set of Hellraiser comics which were set after the events of Hell on Earth. He is due to appear in Clive Barkers novel The Scarlet Gospels. He has also appeared in episodes of Robot Chicken, The Simpsons, Family Guy, The Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy and South Park. He has made appearances in the films Transylvania Twisted, Stan Helsing, Little Nicky and The Cabin in the Woods. Pinhead was also in the music video for Motorheads "Hellraiser". A reference of him was made in the Bride of Chucky.

POPULARITY:
At the time when Hellraiser came out, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday 13th were at their peak. Everyone took to the funny madman and the silent psychopath but Pinheads murderous intelligence was hard for people to grasp. Nowadays however, his cult status grew into that of a horror icon. He had a presence on screen that people, despite the fact that they seemed to miss it the first time around, had never really seen since that of the days of Count Dracula. Even though the later films failed to tickle many taste buds, the character itself always remained a firm favourite amongst fans.

Michael Myers

REAL NAME:
Michael Audrey Myers

ORIGINS/RESIDES IN:
Haddonfield, Illinois

BACK STORY:
He was born in Haddonfield, Illinois on 19th October 1957. Apparently he was a stillborn, but after 10 minutes he was deemed alive. His parents are Edith and Donald Myers (although, in the remake, his mother was called Deborah). He had an older sister called Judith and a younger sister called Laurie Strode. When he was 6 years old, he murdered his older sister on Halloween. He waited until her boyfriend left then butchered her with a kitchen knife, whilst wearing a clown suit. He sat outside and waited for his parents to return home. He was sent to a psychiatric hospital called Smiths Grove Sanatorium, and was often described as having the eyes of the devil. He was under the care of psychiatrist Dr. Sam Loomis, who described him as being completely devoid of emotion and harbouring a sadistic nature. The trait which stood out the most was his complete lack of humanity. 15 years later, he managed to escape the hospital, going on to track down his younger sister, who had been given up for adoption after his parents died in a car crash. He relentlessly hunted her down for the next 23 years before finally killing her and the rest of his family. In one of the films, it seems that his madness had somehow rubbed off on his niece Jamie. Jamie, was Laurie's child yet, in the reboot of the film, she has a son called John. He has been "killed" many times but seems to always "come back from the dead".

ENEMY(S):
Laurie Strode is his main enemy. He tends to hunt those that are related to him but that doesn't stop him killing other unrelated victims along the way.

CREATED BY:
John Carpenter & Debra Mill

APPEARS IN:
Halloween (1978), Halloween 2, Halloween 4 - The Return Of Michael Myers. Halloween 5 - The Revenge Of Michael Myers, Halloween 6 - The Curse Of Michael Myers, Halloween H20 - 20 Years Later, Halloween: Resurrection, Halloween (2007), Halloween 2

PORTRAYED BY:
Nick Castle, Tony Moran, Dick Warlock, George P Wilbur, Don Shanks, Chris Durand, Brad Loree, Tyler Mane (Daeg Faerch, Chase Wright & Will Sandin play him as a child)

APPEARANCE:
He wears very dirty, tatty looking dark navy blue workman's overalls. He also wears a mask that has no expression, the eyes are torn away and it has been painted white. To get the effect of his mask, the creators actually used a face mask based on William Shatner.

HEIGHT:
Over 6" tall.

PERSONALITY:
He doesn't have a set in personality, he is literally a killing machine. He slays his victims with malice and shows no emotion and equally no mercy. He is relentless in his pursuit. In later films however, they tried to portray him as, not only a mass murderer, but as a human, a lost soul more specifically. There are times when you think that he will become good but then his killing instinct kicks back in.

FAVOURITE WEAPON:
Kitchen knife (although, he may sometimes make use of other objects)

FAMOUS LINE/QUOTE:
He doesn't talk.

ANY OTHER MEDIA:
He has appeared in TV shows such as Robot Chicken, CSI (season 7) called "Living Legend" (someone dresses as him), Cold case (in which someone is influenced by him). He has also appeared in films such as Stan Helsing and The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto. He appeared in a collection of short stories called The Nightmares On Elm Street: Krueger's Seven Sweetest Dreams. There was a novelization of the first 3 films he was in (1, 2 and 4). There were 3 young adult novels written by Kelly O'Rourke. Several comics were also released on the franchise.

POPULARITY:
In the first couple of films, people treated him as more of a "bogeyman". This is due to him being credited as "The Shape". Once he came into his own, not through personality as such, but through the fear in which the films inflicted, he vastly became something of a cult interest. This monster that no one knew barely anything about and who time after time, appeared to come back from the dead, proved that he was certainly one of the big hitters in the horror world. Even now, he is still the most recognised and, in a strange sense, the most loved.

Jason Voohees

REAL NAME:
Jason Voorhees

ORIGINS/RESIDES IN:
Crystal Lake

BACK STORY:
He was born on Friday 13th June, 1946 in a small town called Crystal lake. His parents were Pamela and Elias Voorhees. He also had a half sister on his fathers side called Diana Kimble. She herself had 2 daughters, Lauren and Jessica Kimble, and Jessica had a daughter called Stephanie Kimble. He was severely deformed and had disabilities which caused him to be sheltered away by his mother for most of his life. When he was 11, he went to Camp Crystal Lake, where his mother had worked as a cook. He was horrifically bullied however, and to try and escape his bullies, he ran down the pier and fell into the lake. He couldn't swim, but because some of the counsellors were too busy smoking weed and having sex, he drowned. A year later, his mother managed to sneak into the camp and kill the counsellors. There were attempts to reopen but she burnt it down and poisoned the water, causing locals to believe  that the place was cursed, dubbing it "Camp Blood". Eventually it was reopened in 1979. Pamela came back and killed everyone but one girl who chopped off her head with a machete. 2 months later, Jason came back and killed the survivor. He is believed to be some kind of zombie as it is not known how he actually returned. He is driven to kill by the immoral actions of his victims and the rage at the killing of his mother and his drowning.

ENEMY(S):
At first he seemed to aim for summer camp counsellors, but in later films it becomes anyone who came into crystal lake or whoever he bumped into. At one point he hunted down some of his family members.

Roughly about 6" or taller.

PERSONALITY:
He has no personality, just a built in instinct to kill. There are parts of the movies where he almost appears as human, but this is very rare.

POPULARITY:
Over the years, Jason has built up some what of a cult following. The amount of films he is in has made him more of a novelty rather than a big star. The later films are only favoured for their somewhat comedic value rather than an essential part of the series. Despite all this, he is still one of the most famous horror characters of all time and Friday 13th is one of the most popular horror films ever.

Television appearances have also included Robot Chicken, The Simpsons, Dawsons Creek, Celebrity Deathmatch, Beverly Hills 90210, Cousin Skeeter and The Sopranos.

POPULARITY:

Scream was one of the first of many of the 90s slasher genre and possibly one of the best. The killer in itself is one of the most iconic things about it. Everyone was pretty much a Ghostface for Halloween and it is still a favourite even until this day. The one liners are also an integral part of it. Who hasn't had a prank call asking them what their favourite scary movie was? The thing that probably makes it as popular now as it was back then is the sheer under lining cheesiness of it. A good old slasher with plenty of laughs as well as blood and guts.
